Only Slightly Deflated

July 3, 2009 · 7 Comments

My first interview went well and I held my own armed with a good resume, a college degree, professionalism, and a darn nice suit. And I was totally qualified for the position I applied for- but I was told the next day that I didn’t make it to the next round of interviews. I felt deflated after that. I started to overanalyze why–was it my personality?– was it my answers? But than I realized the reasons are never ending but in the end it just wasn’t meant to be. I thought about blogger Natalie’s comment last post that  I am also interviewing them. And I didn’t quite like them all that much—very stiff and too serious. It wouldn’t have worked anyways.

Next week I have another interview at a Portland university. The position is exactly like my old job and it has a nice sounding title that would look great on my resume. But is actually only part time for the next two years due to funding difficulties and no benefits and not enough salary. Looking at my own hesitant reaction to this interview and noting I might not land the job anyways I realized some things about myself.

I’m still happy I moved here but I have a certain freedom right now to be sure of my career path and where I’m going.

It’s only been a month of job searching.

For me the working part of living in Portland is just as important as living part.

Do I really want to work in an office mostly doing administrative things?– or do I want a different career path? One that I started to pursue a few months back.  I have to do some thinking.

But for now I am working in a wine tasting room of all things here on the coast, walking on the beach alot, and working out at the gym.

Here are more pictures from my visit to Newport, Oregon.

One step at the time. Give yourself the time to feel what you would really like to do, while keeping looking for jobs and interviews. Sometimes slowing down and taking some distance from all what it is familiar and from all our ideas, and dreams and desires, give us the opportunity to look at them under another perspective and to understand what it really matters for us.
Good luck with your new life and keep having faith in yourself, you never know from where the next opportunity can come from.

fromtheworld-I agree. I have to seperate myself from the familiar ideas of what I should do and what is best for me. :)

hi hon! glad to see you wrote an update, i was thinking about how Oregon was treating you. I totally get all your question marks in regards to career choices. I think a lot has to do with 1) how quickly you need cashflow. If you need to a source of income ASAP I’d say be less “choosy” and find something that will do “for now” but if you have the time to really sit and think about what you ultimately want to do, then I would say definitely take your time. This is all obvious advice. Keep us updated and good luck! :)

don’t get discouraged. I remember when i moved to nyc i pounded the pavement looking for a job, being from the midwest I am always polite to people, whereas new yorkers give off a slightly stronger attitude (not mean just a bit tougher) so this one company said I was too nice for the job!

At that time i was so nervous about finding a job, i think i almost got hit by a bus — i was wrapped up in my thoughts and felt overwhelmed by the city! so don’t stress its the first one it gives you practice. you’ll find something and then you’ll be able to settle into your city.
